Privacy Notice

This is the privacy policy for the Dampier Lab's use of the Blackboard Learn REST API to download and upload onto a private Drexel Medicine network student assignments and grades needed to run the biostatistics course, MIIM-517, in the Dampier Lab at Drexel University.

Effective: January 1, 2023

Purpose and who we are

The purpose of this Privacy Notice is to describe how private, internal apps created in the Dampier Lab collect, use, and share information about students taking the biostatistics class, MIIM-517. Synopsis: We don't share any student data with anyone except the instructors and teaching assistants (TAs) of the MIIM-517 biostatistics class and we store Drexel One IDs and never the student's names, emails, or any other identifying information.

Please read this Privacy Notice carefully to understand what we do. If you do not understand any aspects of our Privacy Notice, please feel free to contact us at wnd22@drexel.edu. The Dampier lab is an academic group at Drexel in the School of Medicine, department of microbiology and immunology with a principal place of business at 245 N. 15th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102.

What Information this Privacy Notice Covers

This Privacy Notice covers information from you to Blackboard Learn (BBlearn) that is accessible through the BBlearn web site's REST interface. Blackboard Learn is a private and secure website called a Learning Management System (LMS). BBlearn is where you access your course material, interact with your instructors and other students, submit assignments, complete assessments, and view your grades. Personal Data accessible through the BBlearn REST interface can include information such as your name, email address, submited assignments, grades, and last access to the BBlearn site. We at the Dampier Lab abide by BBlearn's privacy commitments which include: students own their own data, data privacy is a fundamental right for all individuals, BBlearn (and the Dampier Lab) does not sell student data, and innovation guided by privacy by design.

What Information We Collect

Our use of your personal information is necessary to perform our obligations with you as a student of the biostatistics course, MIIM-517. Examples of obligations include grading, reading student comments on problem sets where help is needed, checking student work, evaluating where many students are having difficulty and using that information to improve the course. We gather the following types of information about students using scripts which access data on BBlearn:

  • Student Drexel One ID only -- we never store the students' name and email.
  • Grades
  • Assignments
  • Questions that are incorrect
  • Comments from the student regarding the assignment
  • Aggregate information about the assignment questions missed by many students, so we may improve the course
  • Last time the student visited BBLearn
  • Posts on the Discussion Board

How We Use the Information

We use student data to:

  • Perform grading

  • BBlearn activities. We, the instructors and TAs of the biostatistics class, use the Personal Data that we collect from you when you participate in the class through the BBLearn for processing purposes, including but not limited to tracking progress, and completion of the the assignments and projects.

  • Communications with or from the instructors. When you fill out the comment section when submitting an assignment or otherwise contact us, we may use the information provided by you to respond to your communication and/or as described in this Privacy Notice.

  • Course improvement. We may use general course data (including quiz or assignment submissions, grades, and forum discussions), and information about your activity on BBlearn, so that we can improve the course.

Retention of Personally Identifiable Information

We keep your Personal Data for no longer than necessary for the purposes for which the Personal Data is collected and processed. We will use the BBLearn REST interface to facilitate running the class in the current semester. We will use last semester's class to test new scripts. We may use older classes for testing script changes and new scripts, if needed. Comments from the student regarding the assignment, posts on the discussion board, and other data not related to future course development will be deleted at the end of the academic term.

Confidentiality & Security of Personally Identifiable Information

We will use industry standard physical, technical, and administrative security measures to keep your Personal Data confidential and secure, and will not share it with third parties unless such disclosure is necessary in special cases, such as a physical threat to you or others, as permitted by applicable law. Because the Internet is not a 100% secure environment, we cannot guarantee the security of Personal Data, and there is some risk that an unauthorized third party may find a way to circumvent our security systems or that transmission of your information over the Internet will be intercepted. It is your responsibility to protect the security of your login information. Please note that e-mail communications are typically not encrypted and should not be considered secure.

Updating or Deleting Your Personal Data

You have certain rights in relation to your Personal Data. You can access your Personal Data and confirm that it remains correct and up-to-date, and request that we delete or provide you with a copy of your personal data by emailing wnd22@drexel.edu.
