Conway's Game of Life

This is an implementation of Life for scalability testing using MPI + OpemMP. The implementation is optimized to some extent in terms of computational cost but not memory cost. Three implementations which are tested are sequential version of the algorithm, parallel 1D decomposition (row decomposition) and parallel 2D decomposition (block decomposition).

MPI is used here for parallelization based on non-shared memory (multiple servers) and OpenMP for shared memory (cores on the same server). Both approaches are used simultaneously here. The tests were run through SLURM on a cluster with output presented below. Unfortunately I don't know the cluster specification. Decomposition explanation can be found in literature [1] as well as scalability analysis [2]. The board is square.

Test results

Tested configurations: [10000, 20000, 30000] board edge size (n) / [4, 9, 16] processes / [4, 8] threads.
