Local Preservation School
Local Preservation School: Tools, resources, and tutorials for saving historic places in your community. This repo contains our project website. We are continuing to develop our Local Preservation 101 course, the Local Preservation handbook and guidelines for contributors.
What is the Local Preservation School?
The Local Preservation School is an open learning environment where preservation advocates and volunteers share with people how to save and sustain historic places in their communities. Our goal is to teach you how to get involved with historic preservation in your community through free online courses, easy-to-use tutorials and fun projects. Beginners are welcome!

How can you contribute?
If any of the following is true, we encourage you to contribute to the Local Preservation School project:
- You have expertise in historic preservation, cultural heritage, public history, or related topics
- You want share your knowledge as part of a collaborative open source community
This repository describes the project and collects relates resources and lessons into a single site. You can also contribute to a specific course, our handbook, or our resource repository.

Licensing
All the online materials are free and open. What does open mean? The Open Knowledge Foundation explains:
“Open means anyone can freely access, use, modify, and share for any purpose (subject, at most, to requirements that preserve provenance and openness).”
In support of this principle, resources developed by the Local Preservation School team are published under a Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication. In some cases, we have adapted existing resources published under a Creative Commons Attribution or Share-Alike license where additional requirements may apply to future reuse. This site is published using the Minimal Mistakes Jekyll theme which is available under an MIT License.
