Offline library services for hosting and accessing ZIM content and other files locally.
- Designed to run without internet access (after content has been downloaded)
- Designed to run from a USB flash drive or other external drive
- Only requires Python 3 and the contents of this repository (after content has been downloaded)
- Automatic selection of the appropriate kiwix-tools based on device platform (see kiwix-tools section for supported platforms)
- Automatic download and organization of recommended content

Download the repository as a zip file and extract it where you want the library to reside (ex. external drive)

Run Offline Library.bat on Windows, or Offline Library on Linux or MacOS

Use the browser window (opened automatically) to download and navigate the offline content
The reference service uses kiwix-serve to host ZIM content, and is intended for reference content such as Wikipedia. ZIM files can be added to zim-reference/, and then added to the kiwix/library_reference.xml library file using kiwix-manage. This process is handled automatically for recommended content.
The forums service uses kiwix-serve to host ZIM content, and is intended for forum content such as StackExchange. ZIM files can be added to *zim-forum/, and then added to the kiwix/library_forum.xml library file using kiwix-manage. This process is handled automatically for recommended content.
The files service uses python http.server to host miscellaneous file content. Files should be added to files/. This process is handled automatically for recommended content.
Note: Portable Apps at the end of the Recommended Content - Files section should be downloaded manually due to the layout of the Portable Apps website.
The landing service uses a subclassed python http.server instance to host a landing webpage which simplifies downloading recommended content and navigating to the other servies.
The following kiwix-tools are included in this repositiory:
- kiwix-manage
- kiwix-serve
- kiwix-search
The following platforms are supported by the included kiwix-tools:
- Windows x86
- Linux x86
- Linux ARM HF (Raspberry Pi)
- Linux ARM v6
- Linux ARM v8
- Linux AARCH64
- Darmin (MacOS) x86
- Darmin (MacOS) ARM
NOTE: kiwix-tools for x86 are always used on Windows regardless of the detected architecture. This has been tested on a MS Surface Pro X with arm64 architecture.

The total size of the recommended content is 629 GB (1 TB drive recommended). See the Kiwix Library for more ZIM content.
