My .dotfiles

Synopsis

Simple dotfiles with a manager based on post on medium.com from @augusteo.

You’ll need to have git installed and ready (probably using brew)

Init

To initialize dotfiles repo, you need to run this code

# Make .dotfiles dir.

mkdir $HOME/.dotfiles

# Initlaize bare repo somewhere outside home dir

git init --bare $HOME/.dotfiles

# Set temporary alias for our special git command

alias config='/usr/bin/git --git-dir=$HOME/.dotfiles/ --work-tree=$HOME'

# (Optionally) Set local .dotfiles bare git repo to hide untracked files
# I personally don't like that

config config --local status.showUntrackedFiles no

# Add remote to your prefered git repository

config remote add origin [your repo]

# Add our alias to shell config (mine is zsh)

echo "alias config='/usr/bin/git --git-dir=$HOME/.dotfiles/ --work-tree=$HOME'" >> $HOME/.zshrc

# Add files, commit and push to repo

config add .zshrc
config commit -m "Initial commit"
config push origin master

Pulling

If you want to pull changes from the repo when you’re already have it on the remote server, you’ll need to clone it first and then use the magit alias to pull the changes

# Clone the repo

git clone $HOME/.dotfiles

# Set the alias

alias config='/usr/bin/git --git-dir=$HOME/.dotfiles/ --work-tree=$HOME'

# Pull the changes

config pull

MacOS

Scroll Gestures

Use your touchpad or mouse scroll wheel to interact with Dock items. Allows you to use an upward scrolling gesture to open stacks. Using the same gesture on applications that are running invokes Exposé/Mission Control.
