Hi Rafe,
I just read through your code briefly. I think we are advised to not use iNat API to query. Instead, we should use the AWS iNat open data instead (https://github.com/inaturalist/inaturalist-open-data). I have the code (in R) there to deal with this and download the annotated observations. I will clean them up and share with you shortly (this week sometime).
