Pitch

I want to create an article that shows the data on the violence suffered by the LGBTQI community in Colombia between 2020 and 2021 according to the official report of the Defensoria del Pueblo. I would like to use statistics and percentage graphics to show the type of violence this community endures, the numbers of what specific community is more affected, how many cases in every region of the country, etc. I also would like to show the numbers from the last 5 years to compare how the cases have increased. In general I would like data to help me illustrate a panorama of the risks of living in Colombia as a person with diverse sexual orientation or gender expression.

Defensoría del Pueblo informs: "Between 2020 and 2021, 98 people from the LGBTQI community in Colombia were murdered"

Defensoria del Pueblo presented a new human rights report related to the LGBTQI population. The statistics show that, between 2020 and 2021, 98 people, including lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender women and men, and not conforming people, were murdered in Colombia.

Number of LGBTQI people murdered in Colombia:

YEAR 2020

21 cases

YEAR 2021

77 cases

Defensoria del Pueblo says that the increase of victims in 2021 might be a consequence of the social emergency caused by the pandemic.

Most cases took place in the Caribbean region. This is the number of murders per region:

CARIBBEAN REGION = 28 CASES

VALLE REGION = 8 CASES

ANTIOQUIA REGION = 15 CASES

EJE CAFETERO REGION = 7 CASES

Of these victims, those suffering violence to a greater extent are transgender women. This is the number of murders per specific community:

TRANS WOMEN = 27 CASES

GAY MEN = 14 CASES

LESBIAN = 8 CASES

TRANS MEN = 1 CASE

As in 2020, the majority of the victims were trans women. 16 were murdered, 13 were not older than 35 years.

“Homicides and / or femicides due to the sexual orientation and gender identity of the victim do not constitute an isolated situation in the lives of these people; on the contrary, they constitute the most tragic conclusion of an entire history of violence and the cruelest manifestation of a patriarchal and hetero-normalized system, which makes use of prejudice and hatred to silence these diversities ”, says the harsh report of the Defensoria del Pueblo.

In addition, the report states that the population with diverse sexual orientation and gender identity is at greater risk if it works in the defense and leadership of the human rights of that population.

For the Defensoria del Pueblo, the spread of messages against the LGBTQI community from social media to pamphlets, alongside the speech of some people who hold public office, produce negative image of that community and. They add that these messages could be directly related to the increase in threats from actors of the inner armed conflict in Colombia who attack the LGBTQI leaders and organizations, preventing this population from having an active participation in the Peace Process.

Number of cases of violence for the exercise of leadership and defense of human rights of LGBTIQ people:

YEAR 2020 = 38 CASES

YEAR 2021 = 11 CASES

"We call on the authorities so that those responsible for these criminal acts receive exemplary sentences, and on national and territorial entities to promote inclusive training that breaks prejudice towards people with diverse Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity," said Carlos Camargo, Defensor del Pueblo.
