Strange materials are a set of interfaces accompanying my interaction design master thesis Computation as Strange Material: Excursions into Critical Accidents.

For context, please refer to the thesis document (link TBA). This README covers the some technical gotchas in running/reproducing the interfaces. Feel free to raise an issue if you run into any problems.

Linux Kernel Mailing List

To run the interface, use the alias $ clj -X:lkml.

Database

The Linux kernel mailing list (LKML) interface uses sqlite FTS5 to search through the LKML archive. I do not distribute a db artifact, so you need to download and set it up on your own. Konstantin Ryabitsev has a good guide on how to mirror the LKML using gorkmirror. Once you have the archive, you can use the helper functions in org.motform.strange-materials.lkml.db to configure the database.

Linux virtual machine

The interface communicates to a Linux virtual machine via ssh, the address of which is set using the ssh-address in org.motform.strange-materials.lkml.ui. Change ssh-effect if you want to talk to get stack-traces by some other mean.

Artificial Artificial Intelligence

The Artificial Artificial Intelligence (AAI) interface uses web sockets to communicate between clients, which means you have to make sure everything connects to the correct address. The server accepts a --port flag the interface, i.e. $ clj -X:aai-server --port 8888, while the client prompts the user for port and address on launch. The latter is launched with $ clj -X:aai-client.
