Enhanced Password Manager

This repo is cross-platform (Windows/mac/Linux) GUI Password Manager written in Python and Tkinter.

Usage - Installation

Firstly clone this repo with

$ git clone https://github.com/mipsmonsta/EnhancedPasswordManager

Then set-up a virtual environment using your native system wide python

cd EnhancedPasswordManager
python -m venv venv

Next install the libraries listed in the requirements.txt file using pip

pip install -r requirements.txt

The above steps for you to install the third party libraries are so that you know what you are doing and see for yourself that the libraries are from pypi. Afterall, this is a password app, that you want to know how it works so that you have peace of mind in using it.

Usage - Start app

You are now ready to use the app. Launch it through command line (below asssume Linux/mac)

cd EnhancedPasswordManager/venv/bin # if window, cd EnhancedPasswordManager/venv/Scripts
source activate # if window, run activate.bat
python main.py # start the app

Use menu: File > Open and Cancel to create a default page named data.json.

When prompted set password for the page. This password is used to encrypt the stored passwords. It will not be stored, hence don't forget it! There is no recovery if this password is lost.

To rename the page to a different filename, use menu: Save As. E.g. "data.json" to "work.json". You can create diffferent filenames for different "domains", this way.

Backing Up Your Pages - Locally

The pages are stored in relative folder:

./vault/<pagename>.json

The vault folder is created automatically. You can just keep copies of the pages, i.e. you are very much in control.

Backing Up Your Pages - Dropbox

If you are forking the app, and would like to use the Dropbox functionality, you should apply for a API_KEY as a developer. Then expose the key via the DB_APP_KEY variable in your own appkey.py file.

With that you will be able to link to Dropbox through signing in and then backing up the current opened page file via the tools menu.

The saved files will be located at

/App/<Password Manager Name>/<pagefilename.json>
