College sports conferences have experienced a lot of changes in recent years, with schools jumping across conferences, changing a historic precedence of scheduling and rivalries. Most of these changes are driven by the footbal teams, which are responisble for most of the money brought in by college sports. But making these changes for the sake of one team, doesn't take into account the student-athlete experience of men and women in other teams who now have to travel further and play less competitive teams all because of the football team.
This project attempts to realign the schools of the "Power Five" conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, PAC 12, and SEC) into 5 new conferences that balances distance traveled and competitiveness across the top 5 sports for both women and men at these schools.
The teams I will be looking at are:
- Men's Football
- Men's Basketball
- Men's Baseball
- Men's Soccer
- Women's Volleyball
- Women's Basketball
- Women's Soccer
- Women's Softball
These teams were selected for their popularity and because most NCAA division 1 schools have these sports.
I will look at historic rankings of teams in each sport to balance out the competitiveness of each conference, as well as the distance each team has to travel, and the inclusion of rivalry matches
