Spark on Kudu - Cloudera Technical Summit 2016

Spark on Kudu latest and greatest examples as shown at Cloudera Technical Summit 2016.

General Comments

Writing to Kudu: Docs on DataFrames describe saving to persistent tables typically being done with an api call like saveAsTable(). Kudu presently has a kuduContext method called writeRows() that will write to a kudu table.

Additionally, you can call the write() api directly on a Spark DataFrame.

StructType schemas

We need to create StructType schemas if we want to define a new Kudu table. Now, to do this, we can do a quick and dirty approach as the following

hiveContext.sql("create table person (name string, age int, color string)")
val emptyDataFrame = hiveContext.sql("select * from person limit 0")
val schema         = emptyDataFrame.schema

What we're doing is piggy-backing on hiveContext to create a person table, running a select on that table with 0 rows so you get an empty data frame, and then from there, you can fetch the schema.

A more complete, yet simple way of doing this, so that you not only specify column name and type, but provide nullability, may be to do the following:

Impala samples

The table that gets created by this project has the definition shown in the UI of the Kudu Master. We've copied it into the util directory for convenience, and with Impala shell, define and query from the table as shown:

Submit Spark job

In the top directory of this project, submit a spark job with a sample command as follows.

Notice that we bundle the kudu-client and the kudu-spark_2.10 jars with this repository purely for convenience. By doing this, it shows how you do not need to create an uber jar with these client side jars, rather your application code can stay a minimal sized jar, that should be compiled and tested with the jars you submit with your job.
