#PCB based MIDI Tesla Coil

For documentation, please see (and like ;) my Hackaday project: https://hackaday.io/project/165112-pcbtc-gan-edition

For the mainboard, please use V1.6 to order the pcbs. Select the pcb thickness to be as thin as possible, eg. 1mm. For the current design you also need the bottom pcb coil (https://github.com/lucysrausch/pcbtc/tree/master/hardware/gerber_coil_01) and the top pcb coil (https://github.com/lucysrausch/pcbtc/tree/master/hardware/gerber_coil_04). For these pcbs, please use 1.6mm thickness or thicker (eg. 2mm).

Check out the interactive html BOM for easier assembly: https://github.com/lucysrausch/pcbtc/blob/master/hardware/kicad/bom/ibom.html

Known bugs (V1.5):

  • Missing pulldown for gatedriver input of the flyback converter This can cause problems when in DFU mode as the mosfet might switch on permanently, shortying VUSB (Fixed in V1.6)
  • Missing input decoupling capacitors underneath the LMG5200. Adding additional high-quality 100pF and 100nF ceramic capacitors on the bottom of the pcb improves performance drastically (Fixed in V1.6)
  • Unknown problem causes GaN module to fail when touching the arcs with the finger or a screwdriver. The reson for this is unknown so far. Maybe EMI, maybe bad layout. Just don't touch the arcs for too long for now. Discharges to air work reliably. (Maybe fixed in V1.6 thanks to suggestions from nikisalli)
