Twitterify

Another Twitter plugin for Rails

Twitterify your Rails application with this plugin.

I created this plugin to automatically tweet each time I post a new blog post on my blog, so for right now, it pretty much supports what’s needed to do just that.

This plugin was built based off of the Twitter API docs located here: apiwiki.twitter.com/REST+API+Documentation

You might want to read that to see what options can be passed to twitter with this plugin. ONCE AGAIN - this plugin only supports basic functionality. At the moment it’s what you’ll find under apiwiki.twitter.com/REST+API+Documentation#usertimeline and apiwiki.twitter.com/REST+API+Documentation#update

And even then, it’s not fully supporting the options there. That should change soon.

Dependencies

Twitterify is built on John Nunumaker’s HTTParty (github.com/jnunemaker/httparty/tree/master) so be sure to install it first:

  • sudo gem install httparty

Installation

  • ./script/plugin install git://github.com/joshnabbott/twitterify.git

  • Now open up /config/twitterify.yml and change the settings to your own personal Twitter account settings.

You’re done with installation.

Examples

To enable “auto-tweeting” when you create a new blog post (for example) you’ll need to do something like this in your BlogPost model:

twitterify :url, :title

Twitterify does not require any options to be passed to it. By default it will just tweet the url to the blog post. Any instance method of BlogPost can be passed to twitterify, although, a twitter status update cannot exceed 160 characters or it will be truncated to fit.

Additionally, you may pass conditionals, such as :if or :unless in the form of a Proc. An example would be this:

Only tweet if the is_published? method returns true.

twitterify :url, :title, :if => Proc.new { |record| record.is_published? }

This is assuming that is_published? is a method of the Blog Post object.

Only tweet if the post is a new record being created.

twitterify :url, :title, :if => Proc.new { |record| record.new_record? }
