Goals

I have always been a goal oriented person. I like to have a landmark to run towards. My good friend Ricardo Vazquez inspired me to openly work on my goals. There is something about the act of stating your goals, very publicly. It's almost as if the act of declaring your goals is the first step in the process towards realizing them. So, here is my declaration :)

The List

(in no particular order)

  1. Health and Wellness
  2. Open Design
  3. User Interface Design
  4. Writing
  5. Teaching

Health and Wellness

I know this isn't a professional goal, but I am including it here because I feel that it's my top priority right now. I want everything that I do to help me to feel good about myself and that includes having a work-life balance.

Why? I have had many ups and downs in the past year. This is a year to put my best foot forward and let the past be the past.

Milestones:

  • complete 5k training program Complete!
  • complete 10k training program
  • sign up/ compete in 3 races by end of 2015

Open Design

The process behind design work has often been kept confidential. I'm not sure why, to be totally honest. I think on some level design is considered the "secret sauce" or the trade secret of many organizations and to give that away would be to share what makes the organization unique. Also, many people just don't understand design - thinking that it comes after product development as prettification or icing on the cake. It's my hope that I can dispell some of these behaviors and to open up the process and community of design.

Inspiration's: Hour of Code, Hour of Design, Design Matters

Why?

  • To introduce the community of open source designers
  • To make design accessible
  • To share our work at Bocoup
  • To provide mentorship
  • To meet some great designers and learn about how they work
  • To help to build an open design culture at Bocoup
  • To explore what Open Design means

Milestones

  • ship v1 of Open Design Kit
  • write 5 blogposts
  • try to get at least 3 people to contribute to my Open Design Kit

User Interface Design

I am definitely stronger at UX than UI, and I would like to improve.

Why? To expand my toolbox and to make better design decisions.

Milestones

  • 1-3 UI posts on Dribbble by end of 2015 Complete!
  • Take a professional development workshop Complete!

Writing

I would like to do more writing. This includes articles, curriculum and blogposts.

Why? Writing is part of my design process and simultaneously allows me to share my experiences with other designers and lifelong learners.

Milestones

  • Submit an article to A List Apart
  • Write a curriculum for design workshop
  • Post at least 2 blog posts by end of 2015

Teaching

I have somehow dropped off the teaching wagon and haven't taught one class or designed a learning activity since starting.

Why Mentoring others helps me to master a skill and gives me a platform to make this complex and sometimes confusing field accessible.

Milestones

  • Create a design workshop offering for Bocoup.
