My Tech Book

This project is a template for standing up and publishing your own e-book/paperback.

It contains the materials to generate:

  • E-Book publishable on Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, Google, and just about anywhere else, because EVERYONE accepts .EPUB files.

  • E-Book publishable on Amazon, because Amazon acepts .MOBI files.

  • Paperback with alternating left/right pages, suitable for Amazon or whomever.

The quickest way to test if you have everything you need is to do the following steps:

  • git clone git@github.com:gregturn/my-tech-book-manuscript.git

  • mkdir my-tech-book-code

  • cd my-tech-book-manuscript

  • If you don’t have it, install rbenv (macOS: brew install rbenv, see https://github.com/rbenv/rbenv#installation for more details)

  • After rbenv is installed, run gem install bundler

  • bundle install

This should install all the tools you need. You can now use either the guard command bundle exec guard to continuously generate HTML files.

Or you can build the final product using ./doc index.

The bundle exec guard command will launch a background daemon that watches for file changes. Open the manuscript in your favorite editor (Sublime 3 perhaps?) and do a "Save All" and you should see a set of HTML files rendered that you can view with your browser.

Important

As a bonus, the guard command uses LiveReload.

Find the right plugin for your browser. Once loaded, it makes it easy to submit changes, have guard automatically generate the HTML, and watch your browser refresh the page.
