Repository Data (RepoData) for United States Archives

About

This repository contains the public-facing data for the RepoData project, an effort to gather a comprehensive data set of US archival repositories. The RepoData project team contacted over 150 archival organizations, and received more than 30,000 data points for archives and institutions with archival records across the United States.

All code (located in the bin directory) is released under an MIT License.

Data collected and processed between 2017-2019.

Status

As of March 1, 2019, all 50 states are now available, as well as Washington DC.

Converting Data

This repository also contains a Python 3 script which converts and combines the individual Excel files into a single CSV and JSON file.

To use this file, first navigate into the bin directory:

$ cd bin/

Then, install the required packages:

$ pip install -r requirements.txt

Finally, run the script:

$ python convert.py

Optional arguments

If desired, you can pass the script an argument if you only want to produce a specific output format:

$ python convert.py -o format

where format is the output format. Choices are csv and json.
