This repo will record everything of building a DL model recognizing human hand gesture. Things are arranged chronologically, I think it's a good way to leave the trace of how to solve different problems.

Install Anaconda & Pip

  • As is well known for many DL developers, CNN is an art of data. In other words, CNN is a data-driven technique. Python is a perfect language choice on most cases where collecting and processing image data are highly involved. Anaconda provides most popular software packages to help us fulfill various image-related tasks. Please follow this official guide to install anaconda first.

    Once anaconda is properly installed, we need to create a seperate python environment for this project. Since we will use PaddlePaddle for DL development, let's call this new env 'paddle3_6' indicating a python==3.6 env.

    One more thing for the developers not lived in the States, you may observe a very slow internet connection while downloading packages from official conda website. If so, please change conda channel based on your region, it will make your life much eaiser. For mainland China, tsinghua provides an excellent mirror.

  • Though Anaconda is powerful enough for most of our daily work, some package is not perfectly maintained on it, e.g. OpenCV. As a workaround, pip is our choice when Anaconda fails.

Install OpenCV & Access Webcam

OpenCV Python API should be installed via pip instead of Anaconda.

Then our first python script rendering webcam on a Qt window should be something like data/util/webcam_render.py. Good to go from here. If you wanna learn more about OpenCV Python, check out this link. Now, it's time to save lots of images for future training purposes. And a successful model should be fed with clean and extremely adequate chunks of images, say 30k(25k for training, 5k for testing) for each class.

Create custom dataset

In real world applications, a prerequisite for developing a working DL model is to generate enough images captured by the camera you choose for inferencing stage. There is a simple python script(data/util/gen_data.py) for generating black and white images with the size of 112 * 112. Running this script under different lighting conditions and ask as many people you can find as possible to be a 5 to 10 mins hand model. We will end up with a big enough dataset. Before you run the script, please install libsvm and an awesome non-reference image quality repo named BRISQUE.

中文 在实际场景中,由于获取任务需求数据困难,深度学习算法可能需要与某种参数的相机对应,达到单个模型过拟合且鲁棒性差的效果。当没有光学工程师帮我们调节相机成像时,我们就只能用未来执行该算法的相机采图。这里写了一个简单采图脚本,采集大小为112*112的灰度图。一共计划每类手势30k张图,因此找越多的人采图越好,并且尽可能在不同的光照条件下采集。在开始采集前,需要在 python 环境下安装 livsvm 与 pybrisque,用于判别图像质量。

Data Augmentation

Once data is ready, the origin copy should be prefectly stored in a safe place. Again, data is the gold mine. Then we should apply different augmentation methods to enrich the image space. There is an easy-to-use python library for image augmentation, Augmentor. For now, I just apply horizontal flip to the origin copy and rename to a seperate folder(Details in data/util/make_dataset.py)

中文 当原始数据收集完成后,必须保证其安全性,做好数据保护。因为在深度学习技术中数据比模型比框架重要很多。下一步的数据增强,推荐一个 python 库 Augmentor。 它实现了流水线式的数据增强。目前我们仅适用左右翻转这一种增强方式,模拟左右手的效果,详情可见 data/util/make_dataset.py。

List Data input for PaddlePaddle

Every DL framework holds its own data format or multiple formats. On PaddlePaddle1.6, preparing to train a classfication model, all we need to do is make 2 files, one containing all training images with label, the other containing all testing images with label. Details on data/util/make_train_test_list.py

中文 每种深度学习框架都有其独特的训练数据格式,有时候还支持多种不同的格式。对于 1.6 版本的 PaddlePaddle,我们在训练分类模型时只需要准备 2 个文本文件分别列出训练数据路径与其标签和测试数据路径与其标签。详情可见 data/util/make_train_test_list.py。
