I decided to see if I could make it work with the Arduino and an LPD8806 LED strip.

This is a fork of the code at https://github.com/bear24rw/rgb_table
with the alsa capture enhancements from https://github.com/bear24rw/beat_finder

The code no longer relies FTDI for sending data to the Arduino. It now uses termios and will connect on standard serial port interfaces /dev/ttyUSB0 etc... Removed the unneeded bits of code. Changed how it outputs data over the serial line so it converts the x,y plots to the correct position on the string of LEDs.

The Arduino using the code from https://github.com/adafruit/Adalight to drive a LPD8806 strip.

Since it's just different Arduino side code this should also work with the WS2801 strips such as http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10312 or a chain such as http://www.adafruit.com/products/322 as well, but I don't have one to test with.

This now listens on the Loopback,1,0 ALSA capture device. Below is a sample of an asound.conf file that will take playback audio sent to the default ALSA device and send 2 channels to the Loopback,0,0 and 6 channels to the hdmi:NVidia device. Modify as needed for your setup.

pcm.!default {
        type plug
        slave {
                pcm multi
        }
        ttable.0.0 1.0
        ttable.1.1 1.0
        ttable.0.2 1.0
        ttable.1.3 1.0
        ttable.2.4 1.0
        ttable.3.5 1.0
        ttable.4.6 1.0
        ttable.5.7 1.0

}

pcm.multi {
        type multi
        slaves.a.pcm "hw:Loopback,0,0"
        slaves.a.channels 2
        slaves.b.pcm "hdmi:NVidia"
        slaves.b.channels 6
        bindings.0.slave a
        bindings.0.channel 0
        bindings.1.slave a
        bindings.1.channel 1
        bindings.2.slave b
        bindings.2.channel 0
        bindings.3.slave b
        bindings.3.channel 1
        bindings.4.slave b
        bindings.4.channel 2
        bindings.5.slave b
        bindings.5.channel 3
        bindings.6.slave b
        bindings.6.channel 4
        bindings.7.slave b
        bindings.7.channel 5
}
