Productivity

  • Alfred: App Launcher. Also has handy workflows. My favorite is the clipboard manager.
  • Annotate: Best screenshot annotation tool I've found.
  • Bitbar: Put output from any script in the macOS task bar.
  • Caffeine: Prevents Mac from sleeping.
  • CheatSheet: Hold the ⌘ key to pop up a list of hotkeys for the current application.
  • Dropzone: Menu bar that adds a drop menu for uploading/copying/moving files to a bunch of different services.
  • Fantastical: Full-featured calendar app with a quick-look icon that lives in the taskbar.
  • Giphy Capture: Create mp4s and gifs of screen recordings.
  • Glyphfinder: Easy emoji and glyph search.
  • Hazel: Automated cleanup utility. Can watch folders for new files and run scripts when events occur.
  • Keyboard Pilot: Customize keyboard layouts based on which app you're using.
  • Numi: Calculator app that processes natural language.
  • ScreenFloat: Take screenshots that float above other windows to keep information visible.

Window management/UI improvements

  • Bartender: Management for Mac menu bar apps.
  • Divvy
  • Magnet
  • Popclip: Adds a context menu on text selection, similar to the functionality on iOS.
  • Witch: Better Tab switcher.

Sound

  • BackgroundMusic: Gives you granular control over the volume of individual apps.

Backup

  • Backblaze: Great solution for offsite backups.

Development

  • Charles Proxy: Allows you to man-in-the middle connections.
  • Emmett: Toolkit for web developers. Tools include LiveStyles for live reloading of CSS assets, and code that generates HTML with a simple syntax.
  • Paw: Full-featured REST API testing app.
  • Insomnia: Free, open-source REST API testing app (Disclosure, haven't tried this one. But it looks good).
  • iStatMenus: Surfaces useful machine stats like CPU, temperature, memory pressure, etc.
  • imageoptim: Utility that optimizes images for use in apps and on the web.

Databases

Terminal enhancements

  • CDTo: Terminal shortcut for Finder.
  • OhMyZsh: A substitute for the Bash shell that's awesome. I make use of the git shortcuts very frequently.
  • HTTPie: http client that's a nice upgrade from cURL or wget. Supports JSON, syntax highlighting, plugins, and more.
  • gron: Grep JSON file, outputs the path to the property.

IDE

  • JetBrains: I'm a huge fan of everything JetBrains. Have used IntelliJ, PHPStorm, and WebStorm.

Hardware

  • SensibleSideButtons: I use an Anker vertical mouse, which has 2 extra side buttons, and this allows me to make use of them as back/forward buttons for my browser.
