Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are violent expulsions of cool plasma from the solar corona. Their mechanism for launch from the solar surface is still contested, but it commonly believed to be associated with the twisting of the solar magnetic field. Due to their explosive nature, CMEs pose a significant threat to orbitting satellites and can have geoeffective consequences.
