Whisperfish - Signal client for Sailfish OS

Whisperfish is a native Signal client for Sailfish OS. Whisperfish builds on and includes code from the following projects:

Signal client library in go
go-qml QML support for Go
Jolla MerSDK Go patches by nekrondev
Backend code is based off the TextSecure client for the Ubuntu Phone written by janimo
The user interface is heavily based on the jolla-messages application written by Jolla Ltd.
Image picker is from hangish written by Daniele Rogora

Project Status

Whisperfish should be considered alpha software and used at your own risk. The client is not an official Signal client and is not affiliated with Open Whisper Systems. The code has not been audited by an expert in computer security or cryptography. The goal of Whisperfish is to eventually become a stable, secure, and robust Signal client for Sailfish OS. Code review and contributions are welcome!

Developing

Whisperfish is written in Go. First need to setup MerSDK and install the Go runtime. More details here. Note Whisperfish now requires Go v1.6.

Whisperfish uses a patched version of go-qml for use with Safilish Silica UI. A complete patched version can be found here.

Building from source

Whisperfish now uses Glide for package management which utilizes the new vendor/ directory. First install Glide:

$ go get -u github.com/Masterminds/glide

To build Whisperfish from source:

$ git clone https://github.com/aebruno/whisperfish.git
$ cd whisperfish
$ glide install
$ go test
$ mb2 -x build

Note: The latest tag from the current git branch is used in the package version (mb2 -x). To add git hashes to the package version modify the /usr/bin/mb2 script with the following patch:

Note: There is a pull request currently under review here which enables device linking. Until this is accepted manual merging is required:

If you have the SailfishOS Emulator you can install the rpm into the emulator directly with:

$ ./deploy

To build the arm binaries:

$ mb2 -x -t SailfishOS-armv7hl build

Developing without MerSDK

It's possible to build and run the tests without installing MerSDK. Here's some instructions for building the required devel packages on Debian:

$ sudo apt-get install libqt5quick5 qtdeclarative5-dev qt5-qmake \

i18n Translations (help wanted)

Whisperfish supports i18n translations. To translate the application strings in your language run (for example German):

$ cd whisperfish
$ sb2 lupdate qml/pages -ts qml/i18n/qml_de.ts
[edit qml_de.ts]
$ sb2 lrelease qml/i18n/qml_de.ts -qm qml/i18n/qml_de.qm
