Reconstructing movies from a formatted SD card for a GoPro Hero 5

Recently I managed somehow to format my GoPro SD card before I was able to copy the movies onto my hard drive. Since a quick format doesn’t delete the content of the drive, just the lookup table, I thought there should be a way to reconstruct the movies. I ended up getting about 98% of the movies back. This repo documents part of what I did. The code here has some path hardcoded and will most likily not run as is, but perhaps it is helpful to some people.

Just as a warning, I still don’t really know much about file systems or video codecs, etc. so many things mentioned here might be incorrect, but it worked for me ;) ymmv

I tried out quite a few different approaches, but will only go over what worked best for me in the end.

First step: create a backup image of the SD-card

Since I already messed up the SD card once, I wanted to make a copy of the content onto my hard drive so that I have a backup, but also so that I can easily work with the data.

I’m not sure what the exact command was, but on my linux machine I did something like the following after making sure that the SD-card was not mounted:

dd if=/dev/mmcblk0p1 of=/sdimage-p1.img bs=4M

‘dd’ just copies the complete data into a file on disk. ‘if’ is the source, here the first and only partition on my SD-card, and ‘of’ is the file name of a file that will be created on disk.

Figure out what the cluster size is

On the SD-card data gets written in packages of a certain size, the cluster size. If a file is smaller than this size, it still will use a whole cluster and if it is larger, then it will be split up into several packages and the location and order of these cluster get written into the File Allocation Table (FAT). This table gets overwritten in a quick format and since the packages could be either nicely ordered in time or completely random on the SD-card, it’s in principle hard to reconstruct data from a formatted card.

I found information about exFAT on the net which helped me figure out which bits to read to get to my cluster size, which normally is a multiple of 512 bytes and in my case was 256*512 bytes = 128 kiB.

This also agreed with standard sizes for SD-cards that I found, for example, here.

Standard layout of a MP4 file of the GoPro Hero5 Session

The file standard of the MP4 file is described in ISO/IEC 14496-12 and ISO/IEC 14496-14. However, I only used a few parts of the standard and still don’t understand the whole thing ;)

The important parts for me where that each file is a binary file that has section of the following format:

  1. length of the section in 4 bytes
  2. 4 character name of the section,
  3. data (length -8 bytes)

I checked old movies that I had from the GoPro and each and single one of them had 3 sections:

  1. ftyp (always 20 bytes long)
  2. mdat (variable length)
  3. moov (metadata, also variable length)

This made it easy to search the image of the SD-card for clusters that start with an ‘ftyp’ record to figure out where movies started.

The header to look for is:

header = b'\x00\x00\x00\x14\x66\x74\x79\x70\x6d\x70\x34\x31\x20\x13\x10\x18'

Since ‘ftyp’ is only 20 bytes long, the ‘mdat’ section always started in the same cluster of 128 kiB. The way to find the ‘moov’ cluster is to get the length of the ‘mdat’ section, add 20 for the ‘ftyp’ section and calculate the modulus in respect to the cluster size. Then go through all the clusters and look for a the characters ‘moov’ at an extra offset of 4 bytes (for the length of the ‘moov’ section).

To read the length of the ‘mdat’ section one can do something like this in python:

mdat1_length = int.from_bytes(mybytes[20:24], byteorder='big')

if ‘mybytes’ holds the data of the current cluster.

Unfortunately, sometime the ‘moov’ section consists of several clusters, in which case one needs to look a bit deeper. Luckily the ‘moov’ section consists of subsections that follow the same structure (i.e. 4 bytes for the length and 4 bytes for a section name followed by the rest of the data for that section).

Almost all of my movies had the following subsections inside a ‘moov’ section:

  1. ‘mvhd’
  2. ‘udta’
  3. ‘iods’
  4. 5x ‘trak’

Some time laps movies that I made only had four ‘trak’. I assume that the sound track is missing here.

Using these subsection one can do the same trick again, e.g. calculate the position modules the cluster size and find a cluster that matches.

Layout of the clusters on the SD-card

Overall I got lucky, since I normally quick format my SD-card after I copied the movies. This has the effect, I believe, that the card is empty and the clusters for the movies mostly get written in sequence on the SD-card.

The problem is that the Hero5 with the settings I used always creates two movies, a small preview and a large 4k version. Since the data is created at the same time, the clusters for these two movies are written to the disk at the same time. This ended up with about 50-100 clusters being written for the large movie and then four clusters being written for the small movie, then again a number of clusters for the high-res followed by another group of four clusters for the low-res. Luckily for the small movie it was always four clusters in a row. Once both movies were written to disk, a single cluster was used to store a thumbnail in form of a jpg. The jpg can be found by looking for clusters that start with

jpg_header = b'\xff\xd8\xff\xe0\x00\x10\x4a\x46\x49\x46\x00\x01\x01\x00\x00\x01'

Only for a few movies out of a ~100 was the layout on the SD-card different from the above and some of these I was lucky enough to be able to figure out, but some I lost.

My strategy for reconstruction was therefore to find two movie headers followed by two clusters that include a ‘moov’ at the correct location, followed by a jpg image on the SD-card image. I then tried to organize just those clusters into the two movies (low-red and high-res).

Reading the ‘moov’ data

For the following step I normally just focused on the low-res movie and assumed that all other clusters belong to the high-res one. This worked very well overall.

The next step in the recovery was to create a file that has the correct length of the low-res movie, e.g. copy the first cluster of the movie to the beginning of a new file, then fill the file with clusters that contains just zeros (b’\x00’*cluster_size) and the ‘moov’ section at the correct location and if the ‘moov’ section consists of multiple clusters, find those using the subsections and copy those out too. From the three main sections (ftyp, mdta, and moov) you know the size of the overall file and also the number of clusters for each section (and therefore the number of zeros you need to add). If the last ‘trak’ you found is not in the last cluster, I normally just tried to add the following cluster to the one that had the last ‘trak’ and that mostly worked.

Now you have a file that will already play using for example ‘mplayer’ (it will mostly show carbage but it will be recognized as a movie file).

At this point, I made use of some other software that I found: Bento4. After downloading and compiling it, you have a few new programs on your computer that are very helpful. I relied on two:

  • mp4dump: This will just show you all the sections (e.g. mdta, moov) and subsections, but doesn’t rely on the mdat data being correct. So if you run this over a reconstructed file you can see, if you got the ‘moov’ section correctly or not (best way is to compare all the sections with the output from an existing movie that you might have from your GoPro).

Complete reconstruction

For the complete reconstruction of the low-res movie, we then can use a second program that is part of Bento4 and works on the just reconstructed file that has zeros in the ‘mdat’ section:

  • mp4iframeindex: This program will give you locations of, what I assume, are frames within the ‘mdat’ data. The position is in reference to the absolute beginning of the file.

Looking at the data at these position in old GoPro movies, it turns out that all these sections start with the same binary signature.

frame_header = b'\x00\x00\x00\x02\t\x10\x00\x00\x00'

By using this information, we can now go through all the reported frameindex position and then go through all clusters, check if at the position modules the cluster size we have a frame header and only then add this to the output file.

Using this, I managed to get most low-res movies reconstructed. Some had a few mdat frames that were larger than a cluster and for these I made use of the fact that I always seem to get group of 4 sequential clusters for the low-res movies.

While creating the low-res movies, I also made a python list for all the clusters in this part of the SD-image and saved this in json file. The program could be restarted using this json file, which allowed me to do some hand editing on which clusters should be used. I also used this json file to then construct the high-res version from all the clusters that haven’t been used for the low-res version.

Other helpful tools

While trying to figure out how all of this worked, I also made a somewhat large Panda DataFrame that had a row for each cluster and in there marked, if this cluster contained the start of a movie, or a ‘moov’ section. I also created md5-hashes of each cluster and stored this in the Panda ‘database’ (the file was saved as a msgpack, which worked well for me). I then, for example, went over all my old GoPro movies, cut those into the 128 kiB cluster size and calculated md5-hashes on those and compared them with the database. This way I was actually able to find complete old movies, both high-res and low-res, on the SD-image. This was very helpful in figuring out that the low-res version always shows in up in groups of four clusters and that the low-res and high-res are sharing the same space.

Whenever I reconstructed some movies (I did most of this more or less movie by movie, since the way I tried to reconstruct them changed several times) I also rerun the md5-hash and therefore could see how many clusters are already accounted for and how many can still be used to reconstruct unknown movies.

Files in this repo

I don’t have a single script that does all the work, and as mentioned at the beginning, the scripts might will most likely not run as they are partly because they will have some path hardcoded that need to be changed and other parts that need to be hand edited.

where ‘start’ and ‘stop’ are the cluster numbers in the SD-card image where a section starts and ends that contains the low- and high-res files.

Sometimes one then needs to edit the json file to get the clusters right and then run
