boxgrid.css

A really simple CSS grid layout. I wanted this to be as simple as possible. Using the standard display: grid CSS rule and just a few row and col classes.

Setup

Copy boxgrid.css into your project and load it in your html:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="boxgrid.css"/>

...or include it in your css:

@import 'boxgrid.css';

Basic automatic grid

The base class for the grid system is row. Use class="row" for an automatic grid - one column for every child:

<div class="row"> <!-- 5 children = 5 equal columns -->
  <div>1</div>
  <div>2</div>
  <div>3</div>
  <div>4</div>
  <div>5</div>
</div>

automatic

Any fixed number of columns, up to 16

Add c2 class for two columns, c3 for three columns, etc:

<div class="row c3"> <!-- 3 columns -->
  <div>first</div>
  <div>second</div>
  <div>third</div>
  <div>fourth</div> <!-- 4th child starts a next row -->
  <div>fifth</div>
</div>

3-columns

Span columns

Add column classes to the children of the row container. Use col-2 to span 2 columns. Use col-4 to span 4 columns. Combine column sizes until all columns are filled. When more children are added, they will wrap to the next row:

<div class="row c12">
  <!-- first row-->
  <div class="col-4">four-wide</div>
  <div class="col-8">eight-wide</div>
  <!-- second row-->
  <div class="col-2">two</div>
  <div class="col-6">six</div>
  <div class="col-4">four</div>
</div>

span-columns

Empty spaces

If a column needs to start at a particular location, simply insert an empty div like this:

<div class="row c12">
  <div class="col-5">first</div>
  <div class="col-2"></div> <!-- empty space -->
  <div class="col-5">second</div>
</div>

empty-space

Forms

The row container does not need to be a div, it can be anything. For example, the boxgrid system is particularly useful for forms:

<form class="row c12">
  <input type="text" class="col-6" name="firstName" placeholder="first name"/>
  <input type="text" class="col-6" name="lastName" placeholder="last name"/>
  <input type="text" class="col-9" name="street" placeholder="street"/>
  <input type="text" class="col-3" name="number" placeholder="number"/>
  <input type="text" class="col-3" name="zip" placeholder="zip code"/>
  <input type="text" class="col-9" name="city" placeholder="city"/>
</form>

Column gaps

The default gap between columns is at 0.25rem. For a different gap value you can add g4 to the row class (4 times larger gap: 1rem) or any value between g0 (no gap) to g16 (4rem):

<div class="row c2 g4">
  <div>one</div>
  <div>two</div>
</div>

The g0 to g16 classes apply only to that particular row. But you can also change the gap value globally by adding this rule in your page css:

.row {
  gap: 1px;
  margin-bottom: 1px;
}

Nested grids

Every column can be a row by itself, so it's easy to nest grids within grids:

<div class="row c12">
  <div class="col-2">left</div>
  <div class="col-8 row c3"> <!-- nested -->
    <div>1</div>
    <div>2</div>
    <div>3</div>
  </div>
  <div class="col-2">right</div>
</div>
