GitHub API Cache provides cached result populated from GitHub API requests. As a default, GitHub only allows 60 API calls per hour for anonymous users. For authenticated users, GitHub only allows 5000 API calls per hour. Both are not enough for certain cases. As this stores responses populated from API requests into a web server's cache memory, it minimises the number of API calls so that API limit can be avoided.
GitHub API Cache supports three different authentication types – Anonymous
, Basic
and AuthenticationKey
. Even though it supports the Basic
authentication type, this is strongly NOT recommended to use as your GitHub username and password is exposed on the Internet.
Let's say you are about to send a request to get a reference of a branch. If you use GitHub API, this is achieved by sending a request like:
$ curl -i https://api.github.com/repos/{owner}/{repo}/git/refs/{ref}
With GitHub API Cache, you can send the same request like:
$ curl -i https://githubapicache.apphb.com/repos/{owner}/{repo}/git/refs/{ref}
Note: The only difference from the original GitHub API is just URL – githubapicache.apphb.com.
If you are using jQuery, this can be possible:
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
url: "https://githubapicache.apphb.com/repos/{owner}/{repo}/git/refs/{ref}",
dataType: "json"
})
.done(function(data) {
// DO STUFF
});
If you are interested in JSONP
request with jQuery, this can be possible:
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
url: "https://githubapicache.apphb.com/repos/{owner}/{repo}/git/refs/{ref}",
dataType: "jsonp"
})
.done(function(data) {
// DO STUFF
});
Let's say you are about to send a request to get a reference of a branch. If you use GitHub API, this is achieved by sending a request like:
$ curl -i https://api.github.com/repos/{owner}/{repo}/git/refs/{ref}
With GitHub API Cache, you can send the same request like:
$ curl -H "Authorization: token OAUTH-TOKEN" https://githubapicache.apphb.com/repos/{owner}/{repo}/git/refs/{ref}
Note: The only difference from the original GitHub API is just URL – githubapicache.apphb.com.
If you are using jQuery, this can be possible:
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
url: "https://githubapicache.apphb.com/repos/{owner}/{repo}/git/refs/{ref}",
dataType: "json",
headers: { "Authorization": "token OAUTH-TOKEN" }
})
.done(function(data) {
// DO STUFF
});
NOTE: Using authentication key does not allow
JSONP
request.
In order to change some configurations, Web.config
needs to be touched, especially the <applicationSettings>
section.
