Disable close buttons on non-active tabs

If I had a dollar for every tab I accidentally closed when attempting to switch to it....
There really needs to be an option to do what Firefox does and remove the close button from all tabs except the currently selected tab.
This should be labeled as a Feature Request. I support it, but would prefer to see this as an option (if it ever gets done) as I close non-active tabs often and use Command/Control + Tab to go between them.
Well, another option is to hide it on non-active tabs that are partially obscured. This should probably not be a configurable option. Right now, any tab that is 'compressed' off to the right side is almost impossible to click on without closing as only the close button is visible.
