HTTP and Web Servers

HTTP

HTTP is the protocol used for communication between web browsers (clients) and web servers. It defines how requests are made by clients and how responses are sent back by servers. The protocol operates on top of the TCP/IP network layer and follows a request-response model.

  4. Status Codes: Status codes are three-digit numbers sent by the server to indicate the outcome of a request. Common status codes include 200 (OK), 404 (Not Found), 500 (Internal Server Error), etc. Each status code has a specific meaning.

Web Servers

A web server is software that listens for HTTP requests from clients, processes those requests, and sends back appropriate responses. It handles incoming requests, executes the necessary logic, and returns the requested resources or performs the requested actions.

Key Concepts in Web Servers:

  1. Server-Side Programming: Web servers often execute server-side programs or scripts to dynamically generate web pages or process user input. Popular server-side programming languages include PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, and Node.js.

  2. Routing: Web servers typically define routes or URL patterns that map to specific handlers or functions. The server routes incoming requests to the appropriate handler based on the requested URL.

  3. Static vs. Dynamic Content: Web servers can serve static files directly (e.g., HTML, CSS, images) or generate dynamic content by executing server-side code and interacting with databases or other resources.

  4. HTTP Server Libraries: Several programming languages offer HTTP server libraries or frameworks that abstract away low-level details and provide convenient APIs to build web servers. Examples include Express.js for Node.js, Flask for Python, and Ruby on Rails.

  5. Deployment: Web servers are deployed on machines or cloud services to make them accessible to clients over the internet. Common deployment options include self-hosted servers, cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, or specialized hosting providers.
