  • The Constitution of India is the supreme law in India, which establishes fundamental rights enjoyed by all citizens of this country, regardless of their political beliefs

  • The Constitution replaced the British colonial Government of India Act (1935) as the country's governing text and thus, turning the nation into a newly formed republic.
    • Republic: a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.
  • Dr BR Ambedkar was the chairman of the committee to draft the constitution and is widely considered to be the architect of the Constitution of India.
  • The constitution came into effect two days later, on January 26, 1950. Dr Rajendra Prasad began his first tenure as President of the Indian Union on that day.
  • The Constitution establishes fundamental rights that should be enjoyed by all citizens of this country, regardless of their political beliefs. It also establishes some fundamental duties for all citizens of the country to abide by.

    • Originally it consisted of 395 Articles arranged under 22 Parts and 8 Schedules. Today after many amendments, it has 470 Articles and 12 schedules and 25 parts (According to 2021). The constitution was written on 26 November 1949, and was made the center of law on 26 January 1950.
