Counting contributions from popular mirrored projects

Usually the most popular open source projects like Linux, Blender, KDE, Python, Chromium, Firefox and so on are self-hosted and don't use github directly, any contribution made to them will not be in the form of a github pull request, therefore they will not count towards the event. However, most of them have official mirrors on the site and perhaps something could be done about it, maybe for next year 😁.
An idea would be to count the number of contributions to those repositories by counting the commits in the mirror made by the same email as the Hacktoberfest participant. Maybe a "burst" of commits could be counted as a single contribution if counting each individual commit could be misleading. Or any other alternative that allowed to contribute to these popular projects.
These are some amazing projects and I think it would be awesome to count them on the event.
Thanks for Hacktoberfest!
