kvazaar-wasm

This project showcases the usage of kvazaar with WebAssembly using emscripten.

How the demo works

The docker-compose.yml file will build the WebAssembly files and Javascript wrappers using emscripten into dist/. dist/ is then mounted into a NodeJS-Container and served using a plain http.createServer.

Once the serve/serve-with-sanitizing container started you can access the demo webpage at localhost:8080/index.html. Choose a display source to use for encoding and confirm in your browser's dialog.

Now, your webpage should display the direct feedback of your chosen video source and the DevTools logs should start logging encoded frames.

Running the demo

Run the following instructions to deploy a local webserver serving the demo.

Build and serve without sanitizing

# currently doesn't seem to work so better run with sanitizing
git clone https://github.com/DoLevi/kvazaar-wasm
cd kvazaar-wasm

docker-compose up serve

Build and serve with sanitizing

The demo can also be built and served with sanitizing compiled into the WebAssembly files. Execute the following commands to run the demo:

git clone https://github.com/DoLevi/kvazaar-wasm
cd kvazaar-wasm

docker-compose up serve-with-sanitizing

You can change the port the webserver will listen on in docker-compose.yml for each respective service.

Sources

Topic of interest Location
C-Code src/kvazaar-encoder.cc
WebAssembly building src/build_coder.sh
Demo file server file-server/index.js
Demo Main Page dist/index.html
Demo WebAssembly-interactions dist/kvazaar-wasm-demo.worker.js

Changes to files in dist/ are not hot-reloaded but refreshing the webpage (disregarding browser cache) will make them visible.

Changes to files in src/ must be recompiled using docker-compose up build-kvazaar-wasm-with-sanitizing or docker-compose up build-kvazaar-wasm and then refreshing the webpage. To increase build speed a build cache is kept in .cache/.

Debugging the WebAssembly

To debug the WebAssembly it is recommended to run the demo in Google Chrome with wasm-debugging enabled. Instructions to install this can be found here.

These instructions include

  • Installing a browser extension
  • Enabling debugging with Chrome DevTools > Gear Icon > Experimtens panel > WebAssembly Debugging: Enable DWARF support.

Debugging using logs in C can be done by adding the following statement, included in the emscripten.h header file:

EM_ASM({
    console.log($0, "+", $1, "=", $2); // this is regular JavaScript
}, 1, 2, 1 + 2);
