Introduction to Temporal Logic

The first formal treatment of the ideas now known as temporal logic can be traced to the Polish logician Jerzy Łoś in his 1947 master’s thesis, although some of the ideas he formalized go back much further. While these concepts were originally considered in the context of formal logical and analytical philosophy, by the 1970s, several researchers (including Amir Pnueli and Leslie Lamport) realized that temporal logic was a natural setting for the analysis of concurrent algorithms, allowing for rigorous proofs of correctness.

Before diving into temporal logic, you should first have a basic understanding of First Order Logic (FOL), since temporal logic is really an extension of FOL (or at least, the version of temporal logic we will be discussing here is— there are other versions of it that are not). If you are already familiar with FOL, feel free to skip this section and go straight to the section on temporal logic. But if it has been a while since you last thought about these ideas, it will certainly make things clearer to have these basic concepts fresh in your mind first.

First-order Logic Operators

These are the fundamental building blocks of logical expressions:

  • ¬: Negation. Indicates the opposite of a statement.

    • For instance, ¬P means "not P", expressing a denial or contradiction of P.
  • : Conjunction. Represents the logical "and".

    • The statement P ∧ Q is true if both P and Q are true.
  • : Disjunction. Represents the logical "or".

    • The statement P ∨ Q is true if either P, Q, or both are true.
  • : Implication. Indicates that one statement implies another.

    • P → Q means "if P, then Q". This is true in all cases except when P is true and Q is false.
  • : Equivalence. Indicates that two statements are logically equivalent.

    • P ≡ Q asserts that P and Q are both true or both false.
  • : Universal quantifier. Used to express "for all" or "every".

    • For example, ∀xP(x) would read as "for every x, P(x) is true".
  • : Existential quantifier. Used to express "there exists" or "some".

    • ∃xP(x) means "there exists some x such that P(x) is true".

Understanding these operators is crucial because they form the syntax through which we can construct logical statements about the world. In FOL, these operators are used to structure predicates, functions, and quantifiers to form expressions that can represent a wide range of propositions and arguments.

Let's introduce some concrete examples of translating English statements into FOL, and then discuss the axioms and rules of inference of FOL, using them to prove more elaborate statements.

First-order Logic Operators: Examples

  1. Negation (¬):

    • English: "It is not raining."
    • FOL: ¬Raining
  2. Conjunction ():

    • English: "It is raining and cold."
    • FOL: Raining ∧ Cold
  3. Disjunction ():

First-order Logic: Axioms


A set of axioms is the starting point in a logical system that provides the given truths. Here, we'll introduce each axiom with its FOL representation, an English translation, and an intuitive explanation in plain English:

1. Axioms of Equality

  • Reflexivity:

    • FOL: ∀x (x = x)
    • English: "Everything is equal to itself."
    • Explanation: This axiom states that any object or entity is always identical to itself.
  • Symmetry:

    • FOL: ∀x∀y (x = y → y = x)

    • English: "If two things are equal, and a property holds for one, it holds for the other."
    • Explanation: If two objects are identical, whatever is true for the first object is also true for the second.

4. Axioms of Functions

  • Function Congruence:

    • English: "If two inputs are equal, then the function's outputs for these inputs are also equal."
    • Explanation: Functions in FOL behave consistently—if two inputs are the same, the output must be the same.

5. Axioms of Substitution

  • Substitution for Predicates:

    • English: “If two terms are equal, then one can be substituted for the other in any predicate without changing the truth of the predicate.”
    • Explanation: This means if x equals y, and P(x) is true, then P(y) must also be true.
  • Substitution for Functions:

    • FOL: ∀x∀y (x = y → f(x) = f(y))
    • English: “If two terms are equal, one can be substituted for the other in any function, and the values of the function at those terms will be equal.”
    • Explanation: This axiom is essential for functions in FOL, implying that functions are well-defined - if x equals y, then f(x) must equal f(y).

First-order Logic: Rules of Inference:

Rules of inference are the methods used to derive new truths from existing ones. Starting with the axioms as the basic truths, we can use the rules of inference to prove new statements of increasing complexity, which can then in turn be used as the premises of new proofs, allowing us to build up an edifice of knowledge on a sure foundation. The following are the fundamental rules of inference in First-Order Logic (FOL), along with their intuition:

1. Modus Ponens:

  • Formulation: If P → Q (If P implies Q) and P are both true, then Q is also true.
  • Example: If "It is raining" implies "The ground is wet" (P → Q), and "It is raining" (P) is true, then "The ground is wet" (Q) must also be true.
  • Intuition: Modus Ponens allows us to draw a direct conclusion when a conditional statement and its antecedent are true. It's like saying, "If A leads to B, and A is true, then B must also be true."

2. Modus Tollens:

  • Formulation: If P → Q and ¬Q are both true, then ¬P is also true.
  • Example: If "If it is raining, then the ground is wet" (P → Q), and "The ground is not wet" (¬Q) is true, then "It is not raining" (¬P) must also be true.
  • Intuition: Modus Tollens is the contrapositive reasoning. It lets us infer the negation of the antecedent from the negation of the consequent in a conditional statement.

3. Hypothetical Syllogism:

  • Formulation: If P → Q and Q → R are both true, then P → R is also true.
  • Example: If "If it is raining, then the ground is wet" (P → Q), and "If the ground is wet, then plants grow" (Q → R), then "If it is raining, then plants grow" (P → R) is also true.
  • Intuition: This rule allows us to link together two conditional statements to form a new conditional. It’s like connecting dots in a logical sequence.

4. Disjunctive Syllogism:

  • Intuition: This rule allows us to apply a general statement to specific cases. It’s like saying, "What's true for everything in a group is true for each member of the group."

First-order Logic: Proofs

The interaction between axioms and rules of inference is crucial for the logical progression of arguments in FOL. For instance:

  • When using Modus Ponens, an axiom might establish that if P then Q (P → Q), and another statement or deduction might establish P. Through Modus Ponens, we can then infer Q.

  • The axiom of substitution is particularly useful in proofs involving equalities and functions. For example, if we have established that x = y and we know P(x), we can use the substitution axiom to infer P(y).

  • Axioms like reflexivity, symmetry, and transitivity for equality are often used in proofs to manipulate and reason about equalities and inequalities.

So the axioms of FOL are not just static truths, but active tools used in conjunction with rules of inference to build complex logical arguments.

Now we will give a couple example proofs; the first will be extremely simple and obvious to show the form. Then we will give another couple that are longer and more complex. We'll use multiple axioms and logical steps to demonstrate the process of deduction. Here's the simple example:

Statement in English: "If every parent loves their child and Chris is Alex's parent, then Chris loves Alex. Additionally, if Chris loves Alex, then Alex is happy."

Translation into FOL:

  1. ∀x∀y(Parent(x, y) → Loves(x, y)) - "Every parent loves their child."
  2. Parent(Chris, Alex) - "Chris is Alex's parent."
  3. Loves(x, y) → Happy(y) - "If someone loves another, the latter is happy."

Proof:

  1. Assume ∀x∀y(Parent(x, y) → Loves(x, y)) (Axiom 1).
  2. Assume Parent(Chris, Alex) (Axiom 2).

  8. However, from (3), since Baker(Alice) → Gardener(Alice), there remains the possibility of Alice being a gardener independent of her being a baker. Hence, Gardener(Alice) is not logically precluded.

In this proof, we employed a wider range of logical techniques, including Universal Instantiation, Disjunctive Syllogism, and Modus Ponens, and carefully navigated around a common logical fallacy (confusing the converse of a conditional statement with the conditional statement itself).

Finally, we give one more complex proof:

Statement in English: "In a certain village, every baker who is not a gardener likes to jog. Any villager who likes to jog but is not a cyclist is a swimmer. No swimmer or cyclist is a baker. Samuel, a resident of the village, is a baker and a gardener. Thus, Samuel does not like to jog, and if he is not a cyclist, he must be neither a swimmer nor a baker."

Translation into FOL:

  1. ∀x((Baker(x) ∧ ¬Gardener(x)) → LikesJogging(x)) - "Every baker who is not a gardener likes to jog."

  9. Therefore, Samuel, being a non-jogging baker and gardener, cannot be a swimmer, and his status as a cyclist is independent of these conclusions.

This proof illustrates a complex application of FOL principles, including Modus Tollens, and a careful examination of conditional statements and their implications. It demonstrates the intricate logical reasoning possible with FOL, especially when dealing with multiple overlapping conditions and roles. This example required a deeper understanding of the conditional relationships and the careful application of logical rules to avoid fallacious conclusions.

Now, let’s build upon the foundation of FOL to contemplate time. Why is this even a useful thing to attempt? Well, if you are modeling and reasoning about systems where the state changes over time, then it’s hard to properly evaluate these situations using only the concepts included in FOL. This is particularly true when events can take place at the same time!


Temporal Logic

Essentially, temporal logic starts with FOL and then adds a couple new concepts which pertain to time:

  • Terms for Time Moments or Intervals:

    • Variables representing specific moments in time or time intervals are terms in temporal logic.
    • Examples: t1, t2 for specific moments; interval1, interval2 for intervals.
  • Terms with Function Symbol δ:

    • A term can be constructed using the function symbol δ applied to a term representing a time moment and another term representing a time interval.
    • Examples:
      • δ(t1, interval1), representing a new time moment derived from t1 and interval1.
      • δ(t, 5) could represent "5 time units after time t."
  • The realization operator, denoted by U, which is used to express that a certain proposition is true at a specific time or within a specific time interval.

    • Example: U(t, p) could mean "Proposition p is true at time t."

So what kind of statements can we make using temporal logic? This is known as the Set of Formulas for temporal logic, and includes the following:

  • Standard FOL Formulas:

    • Plain English: All formulas valid in First-order Logic are also valid in Temporal Logic.
    • Example: ∀x(P(x)) meaning "For all x, P(x) is true."
  • Formulas with Realization Operator U:

    • Plain English: A formula can be formed using the realization operator U with a term and a propositional variable.
    • Example: U(t1, P) meaning "Proposition P is realized at time t1."
  • Negation of a Formula:

    • Plain English: The negation of any formula is also a formula.
    • Example: ¬U(t1, P) meaning "It is not the case that P is realized at time t1."
  • Binary Logical Operators:

    • Plain English: Formulas can be combined using standard logical operators like and, or, implies.
    • Example: U(t1, P) ∧ U(t2, Q) meaning "P is realized at t1 and Q is realized at t2."
  • Quantifiers in Formulas:

    • Plain English: Formulas can include universal or existential quantifiers over variables.
    • Example: ∀t U(t, P) meaning "For all times t, P is realized."

We are now ready to ask, what are the axioms of temporal logic? How are these different from the axioms in FOL? Essentially, they are mostly based on the same concepts, but now in the context of time. However, there are a couple genuinely new axioms which do not have a close analogy in FOL.

We will now give each of the axioms below, but first translate each of them into English; the symbolic form will then given below that, along with an intuitive explanation and example to make things easier to understand, and finally a link to how that axiom relates to a corresponding concept in classical logic (FOL):

  1. Realization of Negated Proposition: The realization of a negated proposition at a time is equivalent to the negation of the realization of that proposition at the same time.

    • Symbolic: U(t1, ¬p) ≡ ¬U(t1, p)
    • Intuition: The realization of a proposition's negation at a time is the same as negating the proposition's realization at that time.
    • Example: If "It is not raining at noon" is realized, it is equivalent to "It is not the case that it is raining at noon."
    • Link to classical logic: This axiom establishes that time doesn't affect the logical structure of negation— the truth value of not p at time t is the same as not having p be true at time t.
  2. Realization of Implication: If a proposition implies another, then the realization of the first proposition at a time implies the realization of the second at the same time.

    • Intuition: The axiom suggests that if a proposition holds at every point in time, it can be considered a universally true proposition within the context of the temporal framework. It's important to note that this doesn't mean **p** is a tautology in the classical logical sense, but rather that it's perpetually true in every time frame considered within the scope of the temporal logic.
    • Example: Consider the proposition "The sun rises in the east." If at every moment in time we observe or realize this proposition to be true (U(t, "The sun rises in the east")), then within our temporal logic framework, it's globally true that the sun rises in the east (G("The sun rises in the east")).

In classical logic, a universally true statement or a tautology is true by virtue of its logical form alone, independent of any temporal context. In contrast, in temporal logic, **G(p)** is about the persistent truth of **p** across all time points within the model's temporal framework, not about its logical form.
  7. Realization Over Interval Implies Moment: For all times and intervals, the realization of a proposition over an interval implies the realization of the proposition at any moment within that interval.

    • Symbolic: ∀t ∀n ∃t2 ∀p (U(δ(t, n), p) → U(t2, p))
    • Intuition: If a proposition is realized over an interval, it implies the realization of the proposition at some moment within that interval.
    • Example: If "It is raining over the next hour" is realized, it implies that there is a specific moment within that hour when it is raining.
    • Link to classical logic: Again, there isn’t really an analogy in classical logic to this concept; this axiom relates truths over intervals to truths at specific moments. It is somewhat analogous to the intermediate value theorem in calculus.
  8. Realization at Every Moment in Interval: For all times and intervals, the realization of a proposition over an interval is equivalent to the realization of the proposition at every moment within that interval.

    • Symbolic: ∀t ∀n ∃t2 ∀p (U(δ(t2, n), p) ≡ U(t, p))
    • Intuition: The realization of a proposition over an interval is equivalent to the realization at every moment within that interval.
    • Example: If "It is sunny for the entire day" is realized, it means at every moment of the day, it is sunny.
    • Link to classical logic: Again, there isn’t really an analogy in classical logic to this concept; it essentially posits a form of equivalence between propositions across different times.
  9. Equivalence at Some Time: For all propositions, if for some time a proposition is equivalent to another proposition at all times, then the propositions are equivalent at some time.

    • Symbolic: ∀t ∃p ∀t2 (U(t2, p) ≡ ∀p2 (U(t, p2) ≡ U(t2, p2)))
    • Intuition: If, for some time, a proposition is equivalent to another proposition at all times, then the propositions are equivalent at some time.
    • Example: If at some point in time, a proposition holds the same truth value as another proposition at all times, then there is a time when both propositions are equivalent.

So that is all of the axioms in the original formualtion of temporal logic. What about the rules of inference? Well, those are essentialyl the same as in FOL. While temporal logic extends FOL by introducing additional terms and axioms to handle the concept of time, the fundamental mechanics of how inferences are drawn remain similar.

There are, however, some additional temporal operators that are used to expressed some important cases when dealing with time, but these are all just convenient special cases of the more general concepts introduces in the axioms using the symbols U and δ:

  1. G (Always) Operator:

    • Definition: The G operator expresses that a proposition is always true.
    • Example: G(p) means "Proposition p is true at all times."
    • Relation to U and δ: G(p) can be seen as an extension of U where p is realized over all time intervals. Symbolically, it's akin to ∀t U(t, p).
  2. F (Eventually) Operator:

    • Definition: The F operator signifies that a proposition is true at some point in the future.
    • Example: F(p) means "Proposition p will be true at some future time."
    • Relation to U and δ: This is a case where p is realized at some future moment, which can be represented using δ to indicate a future time point. Symbolically, ∃t U(δ(now, t), p).
  3. X (Next) Operator:

    • Definition: The X operator indicates that a proposition is true at the next moment in time.
    • Example: X(p) means "Proposition p is true at the next time moment."
    • Relation to U and δ: This operator specifically deals with the immediate successor in time, which can be modeled with δ to represent the very next moment. Symbolically, U(δ(now, 1), p).
  4. U (Until) Operator:

    • Definition: The U operator is already introduced as the realization operator. However, in a broader sense, it can also express that a proposition is true up until another proposition becomes true.
    • Example: p U q means "Proposition p is true until proposition q becomes true."
    • Relation to Original U: This usage of U extends the realization concept to cover intervals defined by the occurrence of another event or proposition (q).

Putting All of It Together

We are now ready to start applying temporal logic to help us understand a complicated concurrent algorithm that would be confusing and complicated to think about in a very rigorous, careful way with the machinery of temporal logic. We will choose as our example a famous case known as the Dining philosophers problem.
