Trello to Things
A super simple migration tool to move out of Trello into Things. I won't go into the reasons to make this move, but if you're looking to, this little script will help.
What migrates
Move from Trello
To Things
- Your lists in Trello come over as Projects, and associated cards are added under their project
- Card name and description
- Activity on your card is appended to the description
- Check lists are included
- Labels are moved over, however, you have to create your tags first in Things
- The due date is set as the deadline
How to migrate
Prerequisites
- Export your data from Trello to
tasks.json
- Install NodeJS
- Install Things
- Download import.js and place it in the same folder as your
tasks.json
file
Migrate
- Open terminal, navigate to the folder containing
tasks.json
andimport.js
- Type in
node import.js
- Your script will run, opening your Things app. Depending on how many cards you have, it could freeze up for a little as it's adding.
- Once done, you'll see in the script
DONE! Processed XXX cards
.
Note the line above DONE!
. If it states there were 0 errors, enjoy!
then you're good! Otherwise, read on.
Handling Errors
there were 8 errors, scroll up to review, you may have to manually copy these.
DONE! Processed 154 cards
If you get errors in the migration, you should see a message similar to above. Scroll up in the terminal window and look for
*******
THE FOLLOWING ERRORED
This will indicate the start of the errors. The errors will include
Error #X
ListName\Card name - <link to trello card>
open "things:///add?this-is-the-url-used-to-add-to-things
and-the-url
may-span-mulitple-lines
but-that-should-be-okay
Error Message:
Error: something should be listed here
I did what I could to remove many errors due to formatting of content, however I couldn't catch them all. When I run this on over 240 tasks, I got 8 errors. I suggest if it does error, review the content in question, it might be easy enough to create those tasks manually.
You can also try copying the things:///
path, all lines included, and paste it in your browser. That sometimes works too.
Issues, requests, etc
If you have an issue with the script, or want to request a change, use the Issues tab and I'll see what I can do.
How to contribute
Want to add more to this? Make a pure shell version removing the need for Node? Please do! Just submit a PR, nothing fancy.
