HapletNativeUSB
I wanted to test the difference between the FTDI USB to Serial converter of the Haplet board programming port vs the Native USB port connected to the ARM M3 for latency. I was being limited to around 185 Hz for my data transmission using the Programming Port. After some research I found this was due to the buffer that the FTDI chip has before flushing data which is set between 8-16 ms. This really destroys high throughput communication for any haptic simulation that is trying to communicate with an external device via the USB port. By using the Native port we directly use the USB standard protocol to transfer data and can achieve rates almost 100 times faster than through the converter. This drastically improves the ability to render stiff and sustained contacts for force feedback haptic applications.
HapletBoard
Version 0.2 of the Haplet Development Board. This board has a tonne of upgrades from the previous version 0.1. First the pins for the PWM outputs for the motor drivers are fixed (pins 6, 7, 8, and 9) secondly we've built in voltage dividers to drop down the encoder supply voltage to the 3.3 volts necessary for the DUE. Third, we added current sensing functionality to the boards so that you can perform closed loop control of a force feedback haptic device (A7, A8, A9, and A10), and finally we updated the SPI pins so that they could be used with MR encoders placed after the gearbox to handle spatial resolution problems that arise to to the backlash from the gear box.
