"You don't have permission to edit groups" after sync network failure

This was pulling down on the items list and getting a sync failure due to Unable to resolve host "api.zotero.org": No address associated with hostname. I feel like networking is somehow generally intermittently broken on my Pixel/Android, causing this spurious network error, but the groups message is clearly not the right error.
