read.xlsx can not read numbers-stored-as-text

the excel file is storing numbers-stored-as-text, when I use read.xlsx it reads the numbers as a character "xml:space="preserve">37.4". the number displayed in excel is 37.4
This is a issue only for openxlsx, other packages are able to read these number
