emacs starts an X window but doesn't receive keyboard input

After starting emacs from aterm, we can interact with its window using the trackpad, but we cannot type in anything. All keyboard inputs go to the parent terminal.

At first I thought this is universal for all X programs, but xcalc doesn't have this problem.
