tar fails with blocksize 16/64

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. macpro:stuebi root# tar cbf 16 /dev/rst0 ./Desktop
tar: Write error: Function not implemented
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
writing of data to tape. Error message above
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
HP DAT160 SAS, Mac OSX 10.6.8

Can you provide a listing of "mt -f /dev/rst0 status". This will list the
blocksize settings and we can debug from there. Thanks.
