Users build on the reality of what you offer, rather than what you say you’ll supply, particularly for infrastructure services. If your service’s actual performance is much better than its stated SLO, users will come to rely on its current performance. You can avoid over-dependence by deliberately taking the system offline occasionally (Google’s Chubby service introduced planned outages in response to being overly available),18 throttling some requests, or designing the system so that it isn’t faster under light loads.
Skill is tricky to measure. Being good at something takes deliberate practice and sometimes a bit of luck. How do you measure that in a person? You could just ask someone if they’re skilled, but this would only give a rough approximation since people tend to be overconfident in their ability. Perhaps a better question is “what would the units of skill be?”
In a distributed computer system, you can only support two of the following guarantees:
Consistency - Every read receives the most recent write or an error
Availability - Every request receives a response, without guarantee that it contains the most recent version of the information
Partition Tolerance - The system continues to operate despite arbitrary partitioning due to network failures
Special knowledge can be a terrible disadvantage if it leads you too far along a path you cannot explain anymore
It is widely understood that statistical correlation between two variables ≠ causation.
