This is a lecture note for the course DS-GA 3001 at the Center for Data Science, New York University in Fall 2015. The instructor is Kyunghyun Cho, and the syllabus can be found at http://www.kyunghyuncho.me/home/courses/ds-ga-3001-fall-2015.

NB. there are some issues in math equations in pages 49-52. They don't generally affect the argument, but nevertheless are incorrect. I will fix them (hopefully) soon, but meanwhile, please refer to the issues (big thanks to @ankitkv!)
