Icon looks a bit too much like a + (for adding elements) rather than a sight

Possibly consider using an x instead of a + in the middle?
Hmm. On my dark chrome theme the red doesn't look like something that would be adding things, I don't think, but I can see where you're coming from, and that effect might be less on a lighter theme.
I guess the only way to resolve this is to experiment. I'll mess around with them a bit.
(also I'm not in the least attached to anything about the current icon so nothing needs to stay)
The red doesn't look very addy, I do agree, but it may be a bit confusing.
Agreed, an "x" would be less confusing than a "+". If you were to alter the current icon, I'd recommend making it look more like crosshairs (as in a riffle sight).
