Alchemist Emacs menu is empty

I'm using Alchemist on Kubuntu 19.04. Setup worked fine for a couple of weeks, starting today the Alchemist Emacs menu is empty with no entries. The menu drops down, but contains no items.
Software versions
OS: Ubuntu 19.04
Alchemist: alchemist-20180312.1304
GNU Emacs 26.1 (build 2, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.24.7)

Elixir 1.8.1 (compiled with Erlang/OTP 21)
There is something strange happening with Emacs and the buffers. I can get the menu items to reappear when I do the following:
- Launch Emacs and open an Elixir file
- Select the Alchemist menu (menu is empty)
- Modify the Elixir file and save.
- Select the Elixir file in the Buffers menu
- Now the Alchemist menu items are visible again
