New conversations cannot be started in 2.3.12

Bug Description
Starting with 2.3.12, conversations with new contacts cannot be started.
Steps to Reproduce (for bugs)
- Go to contact list
- Click on a contact without an already existing conversation
- Nothing happens
Fixed in #1058.
