Can´t run mysqlcheck (Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket)

Hello,
I am trying to run the command mysqlcheck -u root -p --auto-repair --optimize --all-databases
as is suggested in this document, https://docs.moodle.org/311/en/MySQL_full_unicode_support
however I am receiving this error message "Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket"
mysqlcheck change to /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqlcheck and try again
