Do the playlists have to be saved again via Settings/Save to be preserved or should this be done automatically when closing the app?

Nop.

All data are automatically preserved in LocalStorage browser API. Do you have any error in your console ? (by create/update playlist)

Using it on android with brave

Brave may be clearing LocalStorage when closing the site. https://brave.com/privacy-updates/14-partitioning-network-state/

You can export the data as a file: Go "settings" and "data import/export".

This method is also available. However, this may require fixing the instance.
