Example shown fails to start with an exception of

Can I run it as standalone test? I don't want to bootstrap whole context as it is very large and unneeded. Right now I am adding@ContextConfiguration(classes = GreetingController.class) but it seams kind of redundant yet required.
The tests from the sample project work. I think you probably just need to put your test in the same package as the @SpringBootApplication class?
That is a good question. Does the complete sample work for you? If it does then, maybe create a sample project that shows your problem, and then a new issue in Spring Boot?
Complete will work as it contains @SpringBootApplication. Without it I must specify controller twice.
I thought we were trying to decide if needing a @SpringBootApplication is a) really true, and b) could be a bug. If you are interested in establishing what is the case, and what is not, then please help by creating a sample application, and maybe opening an issue with Spring Boot, if that seems appropriate.
I think this is working as designed and the question was about code that isn't in the project, so I'm closing.
