Domains as user names on Bluesky get saved as the domain instead of profile link

jaschaurbach opened this issue · comments

I just recognized the following:

I have this profile: https://bsky.app/profile/jascha.wtf

This post: https://bsky.app/profile/jascha.wtf/post/3kia54to32p2v got saved as this one on my Wordpress:

As you can see there is not a link to my Bluesky profile but to my website.

I would expect to get a link to my Bluesky-Profile.

Right! This is intentional. Bridgy is aimed at people with web sites and the IndieWeb, so it prefers to represent you as your web site instead of your social network profile(s).

The "canonical URL" there, which I think many themes render as linked from the comment's timestamp, points to the Bluesky post. Hopefully that can still show viewers that the comment came from Bluesky.

The problem is: it does not show that it is from Bluesky

The timestamp link there, 5. Januar 2024 um 12:10 Uhr, links to Bluesky.

I definitely understand your point that linking your name and picture there to your site instead of your Bluesky profile might imply that you posted it directly instead of on Bluesky. This is how Bridgy has worked for a while now, and I think most people like it, but I can definitely take this as feedback if you don't!

In fact, I do not like it. I understand why you do that but I think in a federated world it would be great to find the source of comment easier.

I know many folks which have a domain as username but no content on their website.
A mastodon user commenting gives the link to the profile from where the comment was sent. It is inconsistent to not do it for Bluesky/AT-Proto as well.

Nevertheless I appreciate your work and love Bridgy. Thanks for providing it!

Thanks for the kind words. The inconsistency is a great point! I'm not sure why Bridgy's backfed webmentions are inconsistent across different networks like that, and you're right, ideally they shouldn't be. I'll reconsider this.

I've made this change. Bluesky profile URLs will now point to their bsky.app profiles, not their web sites. Thanks for the thoughtful feedback @jaschaurbach!
