merge `master` into `smallrye` for 3.0.0 release

This is just a reminder that the master branch (2.4 stream) now contains changes that are not present in the smallrye branch. Before the 3.0.0 release, master must be merged to smallrye.
Looking into this and found there's just 1 change present on master that is missing from smallrye (mostly because I was pretty diligent and always created 2 PRs at the same time). #212 addresses that small discrepancy.
