Sri Guru Ramdass, the fourth guru of the Sikhs, discovered Amritsar in around 1574 A.D. The region was covered with dense forests before the city was built and had many lakes. The Guru invited 52 traders from various sectors belonging to nearby places like Patti and Kasur to settle here in order to start the town. The first 32 stores in the town that still stand on the street named Batisi Hatta were started by these families (32 shops). In the city that came to be called Ramdaspur and was eulogized in the Guru Granth Sahib, the Guru himself moved to live among them.
