Implementation of `getStats` api?

Hi,
I can see in the README that getStats is on the roadmap to 2.0.
I was wondering if any other users have a (perhaps incomplete) implementation of getStats. We would be interested in collaborating on one.
I don't know.
Give me a PR and I'll do a review.
