bibtex records need a better key

Currently the key for a bibtex entry is it's OSBN, which is not ideal given
that users will have to \ref them:

eg:
\ref{1234567890123}

We need to devise something easier to read and remember, perhaps a new
field in the xml 'bibkey'?
