For the purposes of tuition, it's probably more practical (assuming we'll never build an "installer") to have them based under $WKDIR during the build.
Unfortunately, because of the very high duplication in the makefile includes, this will actually require touching a lot of files. It may be worth considering a refactor of the build system at the same time.
